Daybook, 1858 Aug.-1860 Mar., kept by Robert Paterson of Plattsburgh, New York, recording retails sales of a wide range of general merchandise such as drygoods, tea, sugar, molasses, fruit, fish, nails, cheese, tobacco, matches, shot, lamp oil, salt, spices, flour, tools, cloth, spirits, eggs, etc.; as well as occasional entries for towing boats and ferrying livestock. Frequent customers include: Jacob Blanchard, Robert Maxwell, Ira Beckwith, Robert H. Paterson, Anson Griswold, Charles Weatherbee, Francis Craig, Joseph Mercure, James Rickert, Franklin Ward, Isaac Graham, Joel Wicker, Joseph Parent, Manuel Gilbert, the owner of the steamship "John H. Reid," and many members of the Beckwith, Paterson, Wicker, Rickert, Cooper, Mercure, and Wright families, among many others. Several of Paterson's customers appear to have been from the vicinity of Putnam, New York.

Francis Craig was born in Dickson, Tenn., and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1922. He was a pianist and bandleader who co-wrote (with Kermit Goell) and recorded the song "Near You," which was extremely popular and sold heavily on record and in sheet music form.
